Types of mesenteric ischaemic 

Primary Investigations to order 

  • Bloods (Including FBC, EUC, coagulation panel, ABG, ECG) 
  • Imaging (CT, mesenteric angiography) 

 

Approach to management 

  • Acute mesenteric ischemia 
    • Fluid resuscitation, supplemental oxygen, inotropic support if required and empirical antibiotics 
    • Endovascular treatment if patient is stable 
    • Exploratory laparoscopy and laparotomy if unstable 
  • Chronic mesenteric ischemia
    • Endovascular treatment if patient not a suitable operative candidate 
    • If patient fit for surgery, then surgical systemic-mesenteric bypass
